Inter have confirmed that goalkeeper Samir Handanovic will replace Mauro Icardi as the club's captain going forward, amid rumours that Icardi is unhappy at the club.

It was announced earlier in the week that Inter had made the decision to strip him of the armband and instead appoint Samir Handanovic as club captain.

"The decision to remove the captain's armband from Icardi was hard and painful, because we all know what he is worth to the team", Spalletti told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

The 25-year-old still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at the San Siro, but the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea have been heavily linked with a bid this summer amid reports that Inter have fallen out with his wife and agent Wanda Nara.

"He [Icardi] was called up but didn't want to travel with the rest of the squad to Vienna".

It is understood that the decision was a mutual one between the Serie A club and manager Luciano Spalletti.

Sources in Italy say that Icardi's team-mates no longer see him as a captain.

It comes amid hard contract renewal talks with the Argentine.

"Inter have an important game on Thursday", Spalletti told the press.

Spalletti had after the game demanded a swift conclusion to the contract negotiations.

Icardi has been with Inter since 2013, when he joined from Sampdoria.

'Spalletti didn't have it in for me, ' Wanda said.

The situation became more unclear when Nara, speaking on the Tiki Taka show, said: "I would like Mauro to be more protected by the club because sometimes some bad things come from inside".

'He needs to free himself from the talk that is around him.
