"I don't have personal experience of those kinds of brick walls that you face but I think it's upon us - us as an industry - to make the welcome mat very obvious, breeding opportunities for all people who want to be creative and paying it forward and creating that next generation of artists", he added.

British pop singer Dua Lipa took home the award for Best New Artist at the 61st annual Grammys, held at the Staples Center complex in the USA city of Los Angeles on Sunday. She followed that up with "One Kiss", a collaboration with hitmaker Calvin Harris that also reached the top spot in the U.K. In February 2018, Lipa won two Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.

Last year's Best New Artist victor was Alessia Cara, who presented Lipa with her award tonight.

Both St. Vincent and Dua Lipa took home Grammy Awards this year. The "stepped up" comment was referring to a remark made during last year's Grammy Awards by Recording Academy president Neil Portnow. "You'll be hearing from me soon", she said.

"Being in the New Artist category and having so many female artists nominated is a big change". Part glittery silver fabric, part shiny pewter silk, the gown was the ideal look for Lipa's Grammys debut.

She has said her second album will likely come out later this year, and cites shape-shifting pop icon Prince and southern hip-hop pioneers Outkast as major influences.
