It's unclear how long the newborn had been left out in the road.

The little girl was in onesie pyjamas with her umbilical cord still attached. "The baby was cold, but luckily she was discovered early enough that she'll make a full recovery", Undersheriff Tyson Pogue of the Madera County Sheriff's Office tells KABC.

The newspaper carrier found the child a short time later, and he wrapped the baby in a blanket before calling 911. But when he approached the object, he realized it was a newborn baby dressed in a onesie without a diaper, he toldThe Fresno Bee.

A newspaper delivery man in California found a newborn baby girl in the middle of a roadway on Monday while he was delivering copies of the Fresno Bee just outside the city.

Fuentes brought the girl into his vehicle, where he called 911. "There could've been coyotes, there's cars going by fast down that road", Mr Fuentes said. He refused and suggested she take the newborn to a fire station or hospital.

Anyone with information can contact the Sheriff's Office at 559-675-7770. Authorities are now investigating the identity and whereabouts of the mother.

The child was taken to hospital and is said to be in good health.

A witness said he had encountered a woman with a baby just minutes before the infant was found who had begged him to take the child, U.S. outlet ABC News reported.

The woman was described by Madera County Sheriff's Office as a "Hispanic female adult, possibly in her early 20's".

She was said to have been driving a white SUV but details of her physical description are "unknown".

California has a Safe Surrender law allowing newborns to be dropped off at several locations anonymously within three days of their births.

'The sites are typically hospitals or fire stations'.
