"I'm just so proud to be involved and to go into the studio with such an incredible talent, including the talent that's out there tonight and thank you guys for giving us this platform". Emily Lazar, one of the engineers who worked on the album and won alongside Beck, said onstage that she was the first female mastering engineer to win in the latter category.

The Grammys have also struggled with gender inequality, an issue that came to its head previous year.

The music world will hit the red carpet on Sunday for the Grammys, with a wider selection of nominees - led by hip-hop royalty and a bevy of talented women - up for the top prizes. Alicia Keys is hosting this year's event - and she's the first woman to do so in over a decade.

Grammy organizers this year expanded the top four categories - album, record, song of the year, and best new artist - to eight nominees from five in a bid to diversify the contest. The nominations are dominated by Drake and Kendrick Lamar, with eight and seven nods, respectively. Best new artist Alessia Cara was the only woman to receive her own award during the telecast, and Lorde, the sole woman to earn an album of the year nomination, was not invited to perform her own music. Other artists announced to perform on the broadcast include Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Dan + Shay, Post Malone with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Shawn Mendes, Diana Ross, J Balvin, Arturo Sandoval, Young Thug, Janelle Monáe, Kacey Musgraves, H.E.R., Miley Cyrus, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Little Big Town and Ricky Martin. The main performers for this year includes Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Dua Lipa, St. Vincent, Chloe x Halle and Travis Scott.

It all began when Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich told The Associated Press in an article published Thursday that by the time Grande and those running the show reached the point where a performance felt possible, she decided against it because she felt it was "too late for her to pull something together". "Know that I support you - win or lose", Monae said. Taylor Swift, who was snubbed and one scored one nomination, also won't be at the show.

Drama has also surrounded the Grammys around its Motown Records tribute: Some people complained when a promo aired on CBS showing Jennifer Lopez as the act set to honor the legendary record label, which launched the careers of the Jackson 5, the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and more. A representative for the Grammys didn't return an email seeking clarification about the tribute.

Alicia Keys, a 15-time Grammy victor, will host this year's broadcast.
