He was selected during Eurovision: You Decide on BBC Two after making the final three decided by a panel of judges and then winning the public vote.

A celebrity panel and viewers at home make the decision on which song represents the United Kingdom at the sixty-fourth Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Tel Aviv, Israel, in May 2019.

Miller-Heidke won both the jury and the public vote.

Classically trained Kate Miller-Heidke is heading to Tel Aviv to represent Australia at this year's Eurovision after beating out 10 others for the honour.

Rice, who won BBC One's singing competition All Together Now's £50,000 prize past year, added that his track "might just be a ballad but that song's got a big message and I can't wait to perform it and show the rest of the world what this song's all about".

Hovering above the stage in a huge over-the-top silver dress and spikey oversized crown, Miller-Heidke beat nine other hopefuls to be named the Australian entrant for the May competition in Israel. Sheppard took the third place with On My Way on 87 points.

Eurovision - Australia Decides creative director Paul Clarke said "Eurovision will love" Miller-Heidke.

"Kate's performance tonight was quite simply breathtaking and the response from the Australian public has been overwhelming", he said.

Co-written with her husband Keir Nuttall, Kate Miller-Heidke's song Zero Gravity explores the singer's experience with post-natal depression, which she suffered after the birth of her son, Ernie, in 2016.

Despite being a European contest, Australia has been competing in Eurovision since 2015.

It will be the 64th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. "The Queensland Government supported the event through Tourism and Events Queensland and we wish Kate the performance of a lifetime in Tel Aviv". The previous candidates were Guy Sebastian, Dami Im, Isaiah Firebrace and Jessica Mauboy.
