During the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference in September, Harris said that America faced a "critical time" under Trump's presidency and that the American dream sought by King was still deferred.

Host Joe Scarborough asked Harris to address the media speculation surrounding her potential White House run and she said she's close to making a final decision.

Tapper noted that Wallace helped Harris run the California Department of Justice when she was the Attorney General. Harris also confirmed she will decide soon whether to mount a 2020 presidential bid.

That leaves Oakland, where Harris was born, and where she returned after law school to become a deputy district attorney for Alameda County.

"It's a presidential campaign, and every aspect of a candidate's record is going to be scrutinized and they're going to have to answer for it", said Mo Elleithee, a longtime Democratic operative who leads Georgetown University's Institute of Politics and Public Service.

"That being said, I take full responsibility for anything that has happened in my office", she said.

"We also need to stop treating drug addiction like a public safety crisis instead of what it is: a public health crisis", she writes.

In October, Harris visited Iowa, South Carolina and Wisconsin, but it was to campaign for Democratic candidates ahead of the midterm elections.

Beyond the book, Harris supported legislation that passed the Senate late past year and overhauls the criminal justice system, especially when it comes to sentencing rules. There had been fear among her campaign, according to the report, that the Senator could be portrayed as being too tied to California politics.

"Despite a woman's role in the world, there are still certain myths of what a woman can and cannot do, Harris said, citing her mother".

The memoir - and the publicity surrounding it - will shift the 2020 campaign spotlight to Harris this week after much of the focus has been on her Senate colleague Elizabeth Warren.

Yes, Harris can run back to Washington for votes, as previous senators running for president have done.

"He ran as the law-and-order president", Elleithee said of Trump.

"What are we thinking about in terms of recognizing that some people will applaud China for its efficiency and effectiveness and maybe even point to it as the new model of economic power". And those are the issues I think about.
