But, writing in the Sunday Post, she voiced hope that his glittering career will help inspire Scotland.

Andy Murray is a good ally because he has worked to break down barriers for every teenager who is told she can't play football because it's a boy's sport, or every woman told she shouldn't join a rugby team because it will make her seem too masculine.

"Thinking about what I do when I finish playing and rushing into decisions, from speaking to psychologists and stuff, that is the worst thing I should be doing", Murray added. 'I think that's been one thing that for me, the confidence I have in my game, even if I don't play so much, I still feel like I can come up to a good level.

Prime Minister Theresa May said: "Andy Murray has had a fantastic career and time and time again has made this nation proud... he will be remembered as one of the best and most successful athletes of his or any generation".

Her comments came as tributes continued to pour in for her world-famous son.

Bautista Agut, who beat world number one Novak Djokovic on his way to winning the Qatar Open last week, says he still expects a tough match, despite knowing Murray is feeling pain when he plays and could quit if he loses. "I always had good relationship with him".

'I know he'd like to win the first Grand Slam title for British tennis in, what is it, 150,000 years?' laughed Federer, as he looked ahead to a match he would win in straight sets.

"I'm pretty sure (that's the case)", said the Japanese star.

"I'd like to go out on my terms". Djokovic and Federer are on opposite sides of the draw, and can only meet in the final. "He is truly inspirational".

Murray is hoping to able to go out on home soil at Wimbledon in the summer but conceded Monday's match against Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round in Melbourne could be his last.

Murray's retirement plan prompted questions about the future of 20-time major victor and 37-year-old icon Federer.

"It's sad for me, but for all sport, because Andy is a very respected and likable guy around the locker room", Djokovic said. When you are going on court every day without the clear goal because you can not move well, you have pain, then it's a moment to take a decision.

"It's going to take time for me to deal with it". Hopefully you get to retire on our favourite court @wimbledon.

Murray's status in British tennis will see him commemorated in the same way, with Lewis confirming there have always been plans to mark the end of his playing career.

Kyrgios' poor results have caused the Australian's ranking to plummet outside the top 50, making him one of the key unseeded floaters in the draw. Serena Williams was unable to defend her title here previous year because she was taking time out after having a baby, and finished the season with runner-up finishes at Wimbledon and the US Open.

Osaka was the eighth different victor of the women's title in the last eight slams but it would be a surprise if she did not achieve more success very soon.
