Like the three previous deaths, the department said the latest victim was over the age of 50.

She's a health scientist at the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Flu activity was high in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Virginia, according to the CDC.

When the approach, called ARGONet, was applied to flu seasons from September 2014 to May 2017, it made more accurate predictions than the team's earlier high-performing forecasting approach, ARGO, in more than 75 percent of the states studied.

The flu bug has officially spread across the state of Iowa.

But the report warns that the number of flu cases across the country remain high.

The Department of Health noted that "influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses".

And one of the most common complications from the flu is pneumonia, which is especially unsafe for the very young and the elderly. A new study, led by the Computational Health Informatics Program (CHIP) at Boston Children's Hospital, combines two forecasting methods with machine learning (artificial intelligence) to estimate local flu activity.

Dr. Givelichian said another six children in the province have been treated for influenza in intensive-care units.

The message to get vaccinated seems to be sinking in, with more people taking advantage of flu shots at pharmacies every year, said Gudmundson. If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.

It's important at this point in the season to keep an eye on vaccine supplies so that each community can continue to offer the shot, she said.

The machine learning was fed data from the two models and actual flu data to make the predictions as accurate as possible.

Flu season numbers generally peak between December and February.
