Microsoft expects Windows 7’s demise to drive a wave of laptop upgrades

Windows 10 Insider Build 18312 New Windows Update Will Give Your DAW More Plug-ins

That update was not intended for systems volume licensed using Key Management Service (KMS) activation, being intended only for retail devices, but has been mistakenly installed on large numbers of Windows 7 volume-licensed systems nonetheless, according to user reports.

Microsoft introduced this Storage Reserve (as it is also known) to "ensure proper performance and successful updates of your device", but not everyone is happy about it.

"Local users who are part of the local "Administrators" group may not be able to remotely access shares on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 machines after installing the January 8th, 2019 security updates", Microsoft said.

If you have upgraded to Windows 10 version 1903 - or Windows 10 19H1 as you may know it - you will find that a portion of your hard drive has been set aside thanks to the new "reserved storage" option.

Finally, Microsoft has improved the Windows Subsystem for Linux Command Line Tool, making it easier to manage WSL.

Users can gain space back from Reserved Storage by checking to see if they are using so-called "optional features", which are applications that may have been preinstalled on a PC. Files created for Windows updates are marked specially, allowing their space usage to be charged against the reservation rather than regular free space.

Microsoft will reserve 7GB of storage space for this objective, although this figure will vary in the future. This is especially important for devices with limited storage space, and have nearly all of them used up.

What are your thoughts regarding this reserved storage feature? The reserved space isn't entirely lost during normal usage, with certain temporary files having their disk usage charged against reserved space rather than free space.

"Windows 7 is going end of support in a year, and so customers are looking to move to make sure they get updated and so on". The good news here is that Microsoft is working on a fix and will provide an update when it's available.

"Since disk space has been set aside for this goal, your device will function more reliably".
