Researchers hope that low-frequency observations of the cosmos from the far side of the moon, where radio signals from Earth are blocked, will help scientists learn more about the early days of the solar system and birth of the universe's first stars.
A rover dubbed Yutu-2 - the name of the moon goddess's pet, the "Jade Rabbit" - successfully separated from the lander and drove onto the moon's surface yesterday.
The image shows parts of the lander and its robotic rover as well as the pitted surface of the Von Kármán crater where it landed. The rugged terrain will pose great challenges for planning the route of the rover, said Li.
The China National Space Administration (CNSA) said the initial stage of the mission was a "complete success" after the lander and the rover sent back images via the Queqiao relay satellite that beams data back to Earth.
He said the Chang'e-4 landed at an altitude of almost minus 6,000 metres.
The deepest region on the moon, with a depth of 9,100 meters (5.7 miles), is about 700 kilometers (435 miles) to the south of the probe, Li said.
"The information from the depths of the moon will be one of our focuses in the exploration", said Li.
China's National Space Administration (CNSA) has made public a batch of selected photos, inducing a 360-degree panorama taken by a camera installed atop the lander. "We will conduct comparative research between the landing areas of Chang'e-3 and Chang'e-4", Li said.
The moon is "tidally locked" to Earth in its rotation so the same side is always facing Earth.
China's lunar rover got back to work on the far side of the moon Thursday after waking from a five-day hibernation, its official social media page announced. "And this marks one of the milestone events of building a strong space nation", chief designer for the lunar mission, Wu Weiren, told CCTV.
"We chose a vertical descent strategy to avoid the influence of the mountains on the flight track", Zhang He, executive director of the Chang'e-4 project said in a statement. And the SPA Basin might be an impact from that period.
