The Oakland Athletics expect Oklahoma standout Kyler Murray to choose football and enter the NFL draft prior to Sunday's deadline, reports Susan Slusser and Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Kyler is a freak", Kingsbury said. Some scouts and teams reportedly see him as a first-round pick.

The only problem there is that they chose Josh Rosen with the #10 pick in the NFL Draft just past year. He is also expected to be a first round pick, which means there'd be more guaranteed money for him in football than in baseball in the immediate future.

"I'd take him with the first pick of the draft if I could", he continued.

Murray, 21, complicated things by leading Oklahoma to an 12-2 record and a spot in the College Football Playoff, winning the Heisman Trophy along the way. "I've followed him since he was a sophomore in high school and just think the world of him and what he can do on the football field". Which at quarterback, that's impossible to do. "All I know is Kyler has a tremendous opportunity to be a great baseball player and he knows that". The quarterback class is seen as weak, which would give Murray a good chance to go higher than he might have in other years.

Texas Tech showed continued interest in Murray and offered him a scholarship once Kingsbury came aboard.

Murray was selected No. 9 overall by Oakland in last year's draft but returned to Oklahoma for his Junior season, where he won the Heisman after tossing 42 touchdowns compared to just seven interceptions. Certainly, there are more than pure financial considerations at play, but assuming he's a first-round selection in the National Football League draft, Murray can look at Jackson's near-$9.5MM guarantee as a rough baseline for what he'd be promised.

Now, if he slips out of the first round, then we're having a different conversation.
