"He wasn't happy. He came in the dressing-room at half-time and said: 'Every goal you concede in the second-half, I'm fining you £100.' We conceded another one to lose 5-0 and it was taken out of our money. You have to take it in the first leg".

"It's the best way to respect the competition and respect the opponents", Guardiola said.

Chelsea's involvement in the Carabao Cup semi-finals and the FA Cup fourth round the week before have pushed back their visit to the Vitality Stadium, which was originally scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, January 29. They have already made history - can they continue doing so?!

The win at Etihad Stadium was the largest ever winning margin in the semi-final of the competition, and the widest victory in the tournament in more than 32 years - since Liverpool beat Fulham 10-0 in a second-round first-leg tie in September 1986. "The best way is to do what you have to do for our future, and we have done".

Clough won the League Cup twice as a player under his father's tutelage at Forrest before a big money move to Liverpool in 1993 and then joining City in 1995 at a time when Premier League survival rather than dominance was the target at Maine Road.

"I think this one over two legs", said Clough, when asked to compare which was the tougher challenge. And we stopped them, that's a positive for us.

Despite not being able to get out of their own half since pretty much the opening minute, Burton had a wonderful opportunity with 11 minutes gone. The Reds reached the final but lost to Arsenal. Similar to last season, City required penalties to see of Leicester at the quarter final stage and they face Football League opposition in the last four, just as they done 12 months ago.

Nigel Clough managed to retain his sense of humour after Burton's 9-0 trouncing by stating he hoped Pep Guardiola had "more than one glass" of wine on offer for the post-match drink.

"It's good for us because we can play the second team and players who don't play so many minutes".
