The piece also notes that Amazon is sold out of its own Echo Dot smart speakers through January, after they were the hot seller over the Christmas period.

Amazon has cracked the mark of 100 million devices sold with its voice assistant, Alexa on-Board.

This figure was revealed by Amazon's senior VP of devices and services, David Limp in an interview with The Verge last week. You can freely download the Google Assistant app on iOS, which helps, but on Android the Assistant comes built into the main Google app.

One of the disadvantages of this level of support from the user perspective is the functionality of the third-party support will be greatly reduced compared to Bixby, as Alexa or Google Assistant users will only be able to control basic TV elements, including volume, power, and input selection.

Those are some impressive numbers, but they shouldn't really come as a surprise; it seems more and more Assistant-powered devices are being announced every couple of weeks, and plenty are sure to make their first appearance at CES 2019.

So while Google and Apple have their assistants running on possibly billions of devices, Amazon is quickly picking up the pace with different hardware products using Alexa's capabilities.

Samsung's next line of TVs, coming this year, will offer voice control through Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant. "And beyond that, the Assistant is being quite heavily used across these devices as well". For example, SmartThings, a smart home device from Samsung, one of Amazon's key competitors in the tech space, has the option to be enabled by Alexa. Amazon has done well with its two-year head start in the market.
