Aurobindo Pharma USA Inc., an American unit of the India-based generic pharmaceuticals manufacturer, Aurobindo Pharma Ltd., is now in the news for recalling around 80 lots of medicines used for treating heart failure and high blood pressure, from the US market.

The FDA has advised the patients who have been prescribed by their doctors for continuing the consumption of the medicine should know that their medication has been recalled and they have to immediately contact their pharmacist and even their doctors to find an alternative to the medication. "Having a stroke or some sort of cardiovascular event is very serious, and if patients stop taking their blood pressure medication without consulting their prescriber, they're at risk for some sort of serious health event".

The Food and Drug Administration describes NDEA as "a substance that occurs naturally in certain foods, drinking water, air pollution, and industrial processes, and has been classified as a probable human carcinogen as per [the] International Agency for Research on Cancer classification".

The company says they have not received any reports of illnesses or adverse effects. Do check the product name, the manufacturer details, and the batch or lot number printed on the bottle. This is an increase from the two lots recalled in December.

This recall comes after the USA recall on sartan products, including valsartan, last year, and the ongoing efforts into the Europe-wide investigation into the contamination of these products. Torrent is recalling only these particular losartan potassium tablets.

Products manufactured by Accord Healthcare (formerly Actavis) and Dexcel Pharma, which contain irbesartan, may have been contaminated with N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) - a carcinogenic chemical that was formerly used in rocket fuel. Torrent is arranging for return of all recalled products to Qualanex. Several medicines containing valsartan were voluntarily recalled by several drug companies since July 2018.
