Tonight at the 2018 Game Awards, Netherrealm Studios head Ed Boon took the stage to announce the victor of the best sports or racing game award, but sgave us a trailer for Mortal Kombat XI instead-complete with an April 23 global launch date.

Curious what song was playing during the Mortal Kombat 11 trailer?

A community reveal event is slated for January 17th to see what's next for Netherealm Studios and Mortal Kombat 11, with a full release now keyed in for April 23rd, although whether it's available day and date on PC is one important bit of information we can hope Netherealm can share in the near future. Weirdly, another Scorpion appeared to finish the fight - perhaps eluding to the new "custom variation" system that the game will be employing. Just about everything short of an X-ray attack was teased in the CGI fight, which can hopefully be one mechanic to be dropped from Mortal Kombat X. According to the developers, Mortal Kombat 11 lets players build their own customized versions of each character with unique attacks and special moves.

"By giving players more creative control, Mortal Kombat 11 is a testament to why this iconic franchise is so strong and increasingly relevant after more than 25 years. We can't wait until January when we'll be showing more of the game".

If there was an award for the goriest trailer at The Game Awards then it would definitely have gone to the new Mortal Kombat... which is exactly what fans would've hoped and expected.

The game will release for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC on April 23, 2019.
