A pair of major league infielders were killed in a vehicle crash early Friday morning in Venezuela. Some reports say the auto actually struck the rock.

The act is a common tactic for robbers in Venezuela, El Cooperante, a news outlet based in Caracas, reported. They were reportedly killed on impact.

Rivero survived the crash, Univision reported.

Valbuena and Castillo's untimely deaths were later confirmed on Twitter Friday morning by a spokesperson for their current Venezuelan team, the Cardenales de Lara. Other tributes and statements also began to pour in on social media. "We lost our players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo in a traffic accident".

Valbuena, an 11-year major league veteran, hit.199 with nine homers and 33 RBIs in 96 games this year for the Los Angeles Angels, who released him on August 7.

Valbuena received plenty of playing time during the final stages of the Cubs' rebuilding before he was traded with pitcher Dan Straily to the Astros for switch-hitter Dexter Fowler prior to the 2015 season. He collected four hits in seven at-bats (.571 average) while hitting a home run and driving in three runs.

Castillo played five seasons in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Giants, before finishing his career with the Astros.
