The previous day, they had hosted a party at Kensington Palace for the partners, children and parents of those from RAF Coningsby and RAF Marham, who will be spending Christmas away from home.

Speaking in front of a crowd of RAF personnel and soldiers from the 2 Mercian Regiment, Prince William said: "As we approach Christmas, Catherine and I feel strongly that praise for your work and recognition of your sacrifices is exactly what is due to you all".

The 36-year-old Duchess of Cambridge joined her husband in Cyprus on Wednesday for a visit to a military base where they met with servicemen and women to offer their encouragement this holiday season.

By making the short visit to RAF Akrotiri, the couple hope to highlight the contribution and sacrifices personnel and their families make throughout the year but especially when they are separated at Christmas.

As artificial snow fell, William chucked artificial snowballs at a children's entertainer, and Kate was caught in the crossfire. "As someone whose husband served, I know how hard it feels when a loved one leaves home to do the job they trained for", the duchess said, as Prince William previously served as a RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot.

Children's entertainer George Whitefield, who put on the event, said Prince William 'saw I had some in my hand and he had a little mischievous nod and wink and looked like he wanted one to throw back at us'.

Before that, he jokingly offered to step out of frame so Kate could be photographed by herself. "On behalf of everyone back home, we would like to say thank you", the duke said.

The British military base in Cyprus is now used for both reconnaissance and bombing missions against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Kate Middleton wore a green blazer for her visit to Cyprus and Prince William couldn't help poking fun at her outfit.

The couple said they had handed over a present of a bottle of aftershave for William and Kate to take over to Cyprus.
