Ahead of the 2018 edition, the GMR group entered into a 50-50 partnership with Mumbai-based steel company Jindal South West (JSW) Sports for the ownership of the team. After being known as the Delhi Daredevils for the past decade, Delhi's IPL team will now be called Delhi Capitals. In the United States, there is an ice hockey team called Washington Capitals, which plays in the National Hockey League. The new logo, with three tigers on its emblem, has also been unveiled during the event. Going by the tagline "A New Delhi Rises", the event was broadcast live on its official Instagram and Facebook pages too.
The support staff of Delhi Capitals, to be led by Shreyas Iyer, would comprise of Ricky Ponting (head coach), Mohammad Kaif (assistant coach), James Hopes (bowling coach). Amre's role has been redesigned to that of being a talent scout for the franchise.
Hailed as perennial underachievers in the history of IPL, Delhi were in the news lately for surprising their fans ahead of the IPL player auction 2019. Besides releasing overseas players like Jason Roy, Glenn Maxwell and Liam Plunkett, they also let go of India pacer Mohammed Shami.
The team boasts of a battery of young Indian stars which include captain Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw. They have made the trading with Sunrisers Hyderabad to grab the services of Shikhar Dhawan as well.
They finished last in 2018, winning just five of their 14 games.
