Earlier Monday, Trump had posted that he was "Looking forward to being with the Bush Family to pay my respects to President George H.W. Bush".

The Bush family, led by son and former President George W Bush, accompanied the patriarch's body on the flight aboard Air Force One from Texas to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, and then on a final trip down Pennsylvania Avenue to the steps of the Capitol.

The remains of the late U.S. President George H.W. Bush began a final journey on Monday, traveling from Texas back to America's capital city where he served four years in Congress, one at the helm of the Central Intelligence Agency, eight as vice president and four in the White House.

Mr Bush, who served as the 41st United States president between 1989 and 1993, died late on Friday at the age of 94.

Bush, who was president from 1989 to 1993, will lie in state beneath the soaring U.S. Capitol rotunda for a ceremony and public visitation from Monday through Wednesday.

The crew, who flew the plane to Houston on Sunday, have been tasked with carrying out "Special Air Mission 41", the number a reference to Bush's place in the roster of America's presidents. The four-day tribute includes lying in state at the U.S. Capitol for parts of three days, a funeral at the Washington National Cathedral and eventual burial at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum back in Texas.

Remembrances to George and Barbara Bush sprang up in the Houston neighbourhood where they made their home, at a memorial to President Bush at a city park and at the airport named in his honour.

He said it was going to be a tough week and he looked forward to it being over. A funeral service is set for Wednesday at the National Cathedral.

Donald Trump has ordered the federal government closed on Wednesday for a national day of mourning.

The photo touched the hearts of many Twitter users.

During this service Bush's grandson George P. Bush will speak as will Bush's best friend, James Baker, Bush's chief of staff and Secretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury. The casket will return to Texas for a funeral Thursday afternoon at his presidential library in College Station. Barbara Bush died on April 17 at their Houston home.

George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st President of the United States, died on November 30, and President Donald Trump has declared Wednesday, Dec. 5, a National Day of Mourning.
