The Washington Redskins have signed free agent quarterback Mark Sanchez to back up Colt McCoy, according to multiple reports.

Washington will continue its quest for a division title and playoff run behind Colt McCoy, who led a pair of touchdown drives in the team's loss to the Houston Texans after Smith's gruesome injury ended his season.

Joe Theismann broke his right tibia and fibula on November 18, 1985 in a game in Washington that ended 23-21.

The injury was eerily similar to the one Joe Theisman experienced 33 years ago when Lawrence Taylor sacked the former Redskins QB.

Surgery is coming. In fact, he was reportedly already taken to the hospital.

Sanchez and Clemens know offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh from their time with the New York Jets.

Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is helped onto a cart after injuring his leg Sunday.

Washington will play in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day with first place in the NFC East on the line.

Sanchez apparently beat out at least National Football League flameouts EJ Manuel and TJ Yates to be in the wings for a Washington squad that is controlling the NFC East but just had its season rocked.

His debut in a Redskins jersey will come six years to the day of the play for which he's most known: the butt fumble.
