Per the report, Lee was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles early Monday morning, where he eventually died.

For many years, the business had been dominated by DC (then National) Comics, creators of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern.

Marvel superheroes still dominate at the box office, with Lee making cameo appearances in each of the movies.

In addition, Lee contributed his voice to a bunch of animated series, including The Simpsons, Ultimate Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk.

The Marvel Comics publisher helped to create numerous universe's best-loved characters, including Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, Black Panther, Iron Man, the Mighty Thor, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil and Ant-Man.

"I never thought that Spider-Man would become the worldwide icon that he is".

Numerous characters were developed for television with varying degrees of success.

Stan Lee: comic book writer, editor, publisher, media producer, television host, actor, president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

"I think Stan was really the first person to break down the barrier between creators and the readership side, and really build a really cool, kind of lasting connection through meeting people, conventions, the clubs he started at Marvel, letters responses he gave", said comics writer and writing professor Stephanie Phillips. Three years later he settled the case for $10 million.

Films under the Marvel banner from Disney, 20th Century Fox, Sony and other studios have made roughly $30 billion globally, according to Comscore. "I just hoped the books would sell and I'd keep my job", Lee said in 2006.

He also revealed that every female character he ever created and wrote was based on his beloved wife Joan, a British-born model who ended up doing voice acting.

While giving us such wonderful characters and worlds, Lee was also a big believer in giving back.

You dreamed up some of my favorite modern myths and created characters that instilled in me a moral barometer, teaching me right from wrong and showing me it's always better to be a hero instead of a villain.
