Rumor: Donald Trump Considering Chris Christie for Attorney General

Whitaker likes to talk about Mueller Rumor: Donald Trump Considering Chris Christie for Attorney General

President Donald Trump listens to a question during a news conference in the East Room of the White House, Nov. 7, 2018, in Washington.

That could politically immobilize the president, even if the Republican-majority Senate protects the President from removal. Previously he was a conservative legal commentator who was critical of the scope of Mueller's probe. Justice Department officials said that under normal circumstances, the deputy attorney general would likely play an active, hands-on role in overseeing such a high profile probe, and they had no reason to believe that Rosenstein would now be cut out.

"It is imperative that the Administration not impede the Mueller investigation", she tweeted.

"We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!"

Both Whitaker and Clovis are rooted in Iowa politics, and both ran for the 2014 Republican Senate nomination. "There is no mistaking what this means, and what is at stake: this is a constitutionally perilous moment for our country and for the president".

"I'm profoundly concerned about it", he said.

Though Sessions was an early and prominent campaign backer of Trump, his departure letter lacked effusive praise for the president and made clear the resignation came "at your request". "Clearly, Attorney General Sessions doesn't have the confidence of the president". Sessions recused himself from oversight of the Russian Federation inquiry, a detail some say may mean that Whitaker, as acting attorney general, could resume oversight of the investigation. In addition to Trump Jr, targets could include former campaign consultant Roger Stone.

During a brief stint previous year as a conservative legal commentator on CNN, Whitaker often appeared as a Trump defender, saying he saw no evidence the president colluded with Russians during the 2016 campaign or obstructed justice. "I'm not recused, you're not recused", Conway told reporters.

Can Whitaker be forced to recuse himself? Or by people who have nothing to do with the Russian Federation investigation, said Mr Ohlin. Four former Trump campaign officials - including his onetime national security adviser Michael Flynn and campaign chairman Paul Manafort - are among those who have pleaded guilty.

The page ratchets the perceived threat of the Sessions firing up to 11.

Whitaker was a hard-charging top aide to Sessions, imposing on the Justice Department his personal philosophy of starting with the end in mind.

He warned that there would be consequences if Mr Trump is determined to have fired Mr Sessions in order to subvert the rule of law and obstruct justice.

On the very morning after Kobach lost his bid for the Governor's Mansion, a new job opening has some people thinking Kobach may get a spot in President Trump's Cabinet - and it may not take much more than two seconds.
