At least one person was killed and several others were left wounded on Friday in Melbourne, Australia, after reports of multiple stabbing "incident", according to Australian police.

The street where the vehicle caught fire was the scene in January 2017 of a fatal but not terror-related incident in which a man drove his auto at pedestrians at high speed, killing six people and wounding about 30.

Horror footage shows a vehicle on fire.

Victoria State Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton told a press conference that the male assailant stabbed three men before one of the responding police officers shot him once in the chest at the scene.

Police shot the man when they arrived at the scene and he was taken into custody but remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Police said there was no terrorism link at this stage but they are "keeping an open mind".

The area has been cordoned off and people have been asked to avoid the area.

Witnesses told The Age they were shopping in the area when they saw a man throw what they believed to be a bomb into a auto before it exploded. The man was shot in the chest by police.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or had footage to contact them.

Counter-terrorism police and intelligence officers are still piecing together how the incident occurred, but it is known the attacker drove a 4x4 truck loaded with gas bottles into the bustling city centre at around 4:00PM (0500 GMT) on Friday evening.

Mr Hair said two civilians became involved as well as two police, trying to stop the man from his attack.

The spokesperson advised a "small number of people" have been stabbed and police are not seeking anyone further at this time.

Two others remain in hospital.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews led the online praise of the officers and the passers-by who "came to the aid of complete strangers". "They are in a suspected critical condition", they said.

Witnesses have described hearing a loud bang during the incident.

Witness Fiona told 3AW her friends had seen someone with a knife in the area and she'd been told he'd stabbed a security guard.
