A senior royal source told the publication that the unique move was "a very thoughtful gesture".

The Queen had broken protocol for Markle before by inviting her to Sandringham activities when she was engaged to Prince Harry.

'And an acknowledgment that she doesn't have any other relations in this country - unlike Kate who has the support of a very close family'.

Ragland, 62, was the only member of Meghan's family to attend her and Prince Harry's wedding in May.

Typically, non-royals do not spend the night at the Norfolk estate, and while Middleton's family has attended church with the royals on Christmas morning, they have not spent the night.

Mr Markle was due to walk his daughter down the aisle but pulled out at the last minute after it emerged he had staged paparazzi pictures in the days prior to it. The palace announced Meghan was pregnant on the first day of the couple's visit to Australia, but the duchess didn't let the hectic schedule phase her, and only missed two official engagements during the 16-day tour.

Meghan and Harry will wait a number of days before they reveal the newborn's name, it has been claimed. "I do fervently pray that you'll all do your utmost to work together in the coming year to make real, substantial progress", he said.

Doria introduced herself to guests on the day as "Meg's mom".

Usually a woman can choose to learn of the sex of her unborn baby at the 16-20 week mark of her pregnancy, which Meghan is said to have reached.

Meghan and Harry recently returned to the United Kingdom from their mammoth Commonwealth tour and will be spending their first Christmas together as husband and wife in December.
