Target also announced it would offer, for the first time, two-day shipping, with no minimum purchase this holiday.

Amazon says it will offer customers free shipping on orders delivered through Christmas regardless of whether they are members of the Prime membership program, a move that comes two weeks after rival Target undercut the company with its own free-shipping offer. The best guess is that it will run through the holiday season until a week or so before Christmas-while Amazon can still guarantee delivery by the holiday.

Prime members already get free shipping on all eligible orders with no minimum required, but without the holiday promotion, non-Prime shoppers must spend at least $25 to land free shipping.

Amazon also said that Amazon Prime members will be able to enjoy free same-day delivery.

Last year, Amazon shoppers without Prime memberships had to spend at least $25 to earn free shipping, but Amazon is waiving the purchase minimum starting Monday to give "customers even more convenient and faster delivery options", the company announced.

US online retail sales in November and December will rise 14.8 percent, to $124 billion, software maker Adobe said last week in a forecast based on data from 80 of the 100 largest online retailers. By comparison, Walmart, one of Amazon's fiercest competitors sells around 75 million products online.

As part of the Black Friday event, Amazon will offer "Deals of the Day" throughout that will see dramatic price cuts on "must-have electronics, toys and fashion to sports, beauty, home items and more". Analysts estimated that Amazon took almost half of all online retail sales in 2017, and that it will account for even more this year. Walmart said it's adding millions more items to its free two-day shipping program, but kept its $35 minimum. More than three million items will be eligible for same-delivery.
