You don't want someone in the household who is elderly or immunocompromised getting it, you don't a woman who is pregnant getting it.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate about 80,000 people died of flu complications last season.

An effective, important way to protect yourself is by getting a flu shot - which should not actually give you the flu.

"We're not in flu season yet but if you are a vulnerable older person living on your own and you're anxious about getting the flu with no one to look after you, not getting the jab would play on your mind and we don't want patients to be anxious", she said. Everyone who is eligible should aim to have their vaccine by early December, before flu activity generally increases. Sometimes it hits us hard and sometimes it's just a mild nuisance. If you wait until cases of flu are widespread, it may be too late for the vaccine to protect you.

It's convenient. You can get the flu shot at your primary care physician's office, Pardee Urgent Care and many local pharmacies. This year's flu vaccine contains two new virus strains.

One resource for students and faculty at the UA to receive their flu shot is at Campus Health.

Should you contact your doctor at the first sign of flu symptoms?

Can you get the flu from having a flu shot?

The NHS flu vaccine is available free to all pregnant women in Wales at their GP surgery or community pharmacy. These include soreness, redness and/or swelling from the shot, headache, fever, nausea and muscle aches. A lot of it had to do with people who are now on social media and and also the regular media who are not getting good information on vaccines. In addition, vaccination during pregnancy helps protect the baby from the influenza virus during the first few months of life, because the vaccinated pregnant mother can pass protective antibodies to baby during pregnancy.

"One of the common ones (misconceptions) that we do get is that the flu shot will cause the flu, and that is incorrect", he said.

One thing that is debatable, however, is whether or not one should get the influenza vaccine. The reason being that the vaccine either has a killed (inactivated) form of the virus that is not infectious or it is made with proteins from a flu vaccine virus that is attenuated "weakened" and therefore can not cause the flu.

If you get the flu, antiviral drugs can be used to treat your illness. If you have questions, it's best to speak with your doctor, nurse or pharmacists. It does not matter where you go because they all use the same vaccine. It is especially important for college students to consider the flu vaccine, seeing that it would spread so easily among the mass population.

"Because flu season is beginning to show up in some of the southern states and it's just a matter of time", Foster said. This study found that an annual influenza vaccination decreased the risk of a heart attack by 20 per cent and offered similar protection against strokes. They beefed up the vaccine this year, so we're hoping that it's going to be more effective.
