These selections aren't particularly surprising-they were expected before the whole Grinch debacle-but they are a welcome finale to the 74 fighter lineup.
There's still hope for some fan favourites to appear in the game though as Nintendo announced that they will shortly begin work on new (i.e. not echo fighters) characters to be released as paid-for DLC.
Sakurai also revealed the plan for the game's downloadable content. Nintendo is developing five sets containing a fighter, a stage and several music tracks at $6 each, and you'll be able to buy a Fighters Pass (essentially a season pass) to get all five for $25. These characters will be created from scratch exclusively for SSBU.
Ken Masters is joining Super Smash Bros. The presentation stated that it may take a year for all of the DLC characters to debut in the game.
Additionally, these "spirits" will also be used to power up your added amiibo fighters. Echo Fighters will have moves and properties that closely match another character's.
Instead there are collectable objects called spirits, with the main story mode revolving around all the Nintendo characters (except apparently Kirby) becoming merely disembodied souls. It also announced Spirits would replace collectible trophies.
The game will feature 103 stages, and new stages will include Dracula's Castle from Castlevania and New Donk City Hall from Super Mario Odyssey.
The spirits seem to be represented in-game as mostly 2D artwork but they all have special buffs and abilities that they can confer to your chosen fighter.
