It might not have broken any records in the United Kingdom but Rockstar Games' latest is the second biggest-entertainment launch ever, after GTA V. However, Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive can claim an opening weekend because GTA V was released on a Tuesday whereas Red Dead Redemption 2 was released on a Friday.

However, Red Dead Redemption 2 hasn't quite managed to scale the lofty heights of Grand Theft Auto V, which accumulated $1 billion in sell-through to retail within the same time-frame.

Being the first new Rockstar game in five years, it feels like the entire world has stopped what they're doing to check out Red Dead 2. On top of this, the game has also set a number of additional benchmarks including being the biggest day one release for a full game in the history of PlayStation Network, the biggest first three days ever for a full game on PlayStation Network, and most pre-ordered full game to ever hit PlayStation Network. It's all wrapped up in an immaculate presentation, told over dozens of hours and adventures that leads to an inevitable conclusion: "Red Dead Redemption 2 raises the bar for the sandbox genre and stands tall as the definitive western game of this or any other generation". In the United Kingdom it was revealed earlier in the week that it was in fact only the second biggest retail launch of the year, behind Federation Internationale de Football Association 19.

It's a phenomenon that has so far gone unexplained and may continue to do so as the lack of solid figures or tracking for digital sales makes it extremely hard to tell exactly what is going on.
