The implication is clear: It's a racial slight, as apparently all forms of political antagonism towards Gillum are. It's no surprise that Gillum leads in polls by an average of about six points. DeSantis called Gillum corrupt. "That is the power that you have", Gillum told a Tallahassee crowd of about 200 people, who were mostly students from Florida State University and Florida A&M University.
Meanwhile DeSantis followed the tried-and-tested Trump attack lines - hitting out at Gillum for being soft on crime and wanting to abolish ICE.
Emails show Corey billed "Mike Miller", who happened to be an undercover FBI agent investigating Tallahassee corruption, for the $4,300 tab.
Gillum's campaign had claimed on September 4 and again this week that he received the ticket from his brother, Marcus Gillum, despite the contradictory evidence. "I'm for police accountability, but law enforcement society can not work and, quite frankly, law enforcement can not do its job if it does not have a trusting relationship with the community", Gillumsaid. "In the state of Florida, we've got a lot of issues". Gillum said he would push for an expansion of Medicaid to bring 800,000 low-income Floridians into the program.
DeSantis, however, mentioned the Broadway tickets several times during the course of the debate.
'Say you're convicted of child molestation.
The New York Post is reporting that the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, using the name Mike Miller, gave the tickets, valued at several hundred dollars, to Gillum.
"How the hell am I supposed to know every statement somebody's made?" he said. I am not going to bow down to the altar of political correctness'. "When you can't refute the obvious facts you then attack the messenger". Gillum said. "I felt surely somebody prepared him a little bit better than this to come on this stage and have nothing to say about what he wants to do for the people of the state of Florida".
"When asked to return that money he said no", Gillum continued. He is using that money to fund negative ads. DeSantis has been accused of a variety of crypto-racist comments, including the time he said voters shouldn't "monkey this up" when referring to the possibility that Gillum, a black man, might be elected. I'm saying the racists believe he's a racist'.
The sparring, to some extent, obscured stark differences on the issues. He said during the debate that he would have pushed for a "stronger bill" than one Gov. Rick Scott signed in the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County.
