On Thursday, the United States president repeated his threat, writing: "I am watching the Democrat Party led (because they want Open Borders and existing weak laws) assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, whose leaders are doing little to stop this large flow of people, INCLUDING MANY CRIMINALS, from entering Mexico to U.S". Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border.

However, this one, coming as it does so close to the U.S. mid-term elections in November, has taken on a highly political dimension, to that point that President Trump has threatened to use the military and close the USA southern border.

Trump also threatened to upend a pending trade deal with Mexico that took more than a year to negotiate and is created to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement. That angered Trump, who sent National Guard troops to the U.S. -Mexico border, saying the caravan posed a threat to U.S. sovereignty.

A caravan of migrants fleeing Honduras has grown to 4,000 and the Mexican government has sent an additional 500 federal police to its border with Guatemala in anticipation of their arrival, according to USA government documents obtained by NBC News.

Honduran migrants bound to the U.S border climbed into the bed of a truck in Zacapa, Guatemala, Wednesday.

"It's going to be an election of the caravan", Trump said at a campaign rally in Missoula, Montana.

President Trump has called on Honduran and Mexican authorities to stop the caravan getting to the U.S. - which it could do in the coming weeks.

Mexico's interior ministry says in a Thursday statement that the government will ask the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees to support Mexican agencies attending to the migrants.

In April, he said in a meeting with foreign leaders that the U.S.is "going to be guarding our border with our military".

He claimed on Thursday that Democrats are backing the human movement to bolster their case for "open borders and existing weak laws".

In the wake of yet another attack by President Donald Trump on immigration as a vehicle for drugs and crime, Fox News' Lisa Montgomery Kennedy proposed an extreme obstacle course at the border to keep out those she felt are undesirable.

Some migrants crossed the river at a point where they could walk through shallow water Thursday, Corzo said.

Marcelo Ebrard, Lopez Obrador's pick to become foreign relations secretary after he takes office, said Trump's tweets needed to be understood in the context of the upcoming USA midterm elections.

"We have evidence that this caravan is also very much politically motivated", he claimed.

Dozens of Arizona National Guard members were among those deployed to the border.

The caravan has been growing steadily since it left the violent Honduran city of San Pedro Sula on Saturday.

Initial election results showed opposition challenger Salvador Nasralla with a 5-percentage-point lead over incumbent President Juan Orlando Hernandez.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived Thursday in Panama at the start of a tour of the Central American region that President Donald Trump blames for an "onslaught" of US-bound migrants.
