YouTube is aware of the issue, though no ETA has been given on when we can expect a fix.

YouTube said it was looking into reports of issues with its services, as users contacted them complaining about the website being down from about 1.30am GMT. "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will keep you updated". More information will be provided as it becomes available.

When the site does load, it displays an empty template with grey boxes where video links should be.

And now a YouTube support team on Twitter have provided the latest update on what is happening with the Google Video Service tonight.

YouTube went down across the world this afternoon and users were quick to take to other social media sites to vent their frustration.

On opening YouTube, the page is either showing a server error, broken images or a blank page.

Instead of clicking through to the content they want, users have been seeing YouTube Internal 500 Error messages instead.
