The former first lady and US Secretary of State said she did not think Bill Clinton's affair with Lewinsky was an abuse of power.

Hillary Clinton has defended her husband, former President Bill Clinton, over his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky by directly contradicting her characterization what happened. Several other women have accused him of sexual misconduct going as far back as the 1970s, which he has vehemently denied.

The two-decades-old episode has come under renewed scrutiny in the #MeToo era, with critics questioning whether the power imbalance between a sitting president and an intern made it impossible for the relationship to be considered consensual.

Lewinsky has rarely spoken about the affair, but previous year, she wrote a powerful piece Vanity Fair, re-examining the events of the late 90s through the lens of the #MeToo movement.

"(The affair) wasn't an abuse of power?' asked CBS correspondent Tony Dokoupil.

"So, there was an investigation [of President Clinton], and it, as I believe, came out in the right place".

But Hillary Clinton, in her interview with CBS, denied playing any role in criticizing the character of her husband's accusers.

And then, following that up with a rote statement that provided not a bit of clarity on her answer, she added, "I take responsibility for my life and my actions".

When Dokoupil cited an opinion that a president can not have a consensual relationship with an intern because of a power imbalance that is "too great", the former US Secretary of State pointed out that Lewinsky was an adult at the time.

"... who was an adult", Hillary responded.

Kirsten Gillibrand, who holds Hillary Clinton's former seat, recently told The New York Times that the former President should have stepped down at the time.

Later in the interview, Hillary pointed at the sexual misconduct allegations made against President Donald Trump, asking where were the investigations into such accusations.
