She informed her staff Tuesday, NPR's Michele Kelemen reports.

Democrats and health care advocates often criticize her refusal to expand Medicaid in SC through the Affordable Care Act during her time in the governor's mansion. The White House will pick a successor in two to three weeks, the president said.

She insisted that she was going out on a high and would remain loyal to Trump. "It has been an honour of a lifetime".

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Haley's leaving is "yet another sign of the Trump administration's chaotic foreign policy and setback from promoting American values and priorities".

Trump said former aide Dina Powell was under consideration to replace Haley. "And then, to come in and do two years of Russian Federation and Iran and North Korea-it's been eight years of intense time, and I'm a believer in term limits", she said. "I just don't know who I'm fighting that day", Haley told Reuters earlier this year. But the Post's John Hudson speculates Haley's opposition also could've driven her departure.

Haley, who is widely admired by Republicans and seen as a tempering figure within the Trump administration, "discussed her resignation with Trump last week when she visited him at the White House", Axios first reported.

Trump and Haley confirmed Tuesday in the Oval Office that the president had accepted her resignation.

Her departure is being seen as a blow for the White House just weeks before the United States midterm election. "We've solved a lot of problems and we're in the process of solving a lot of problems", he said. Maybe a different capacity.

Haley, a former governor of SC, had been an early and frequent critic of Trump, so when he named her the envoy to the world body weeks after his election in November 2016, the appointment was seen as an olive branch.

Last month, she coordinated Trump's second appearance at the United Nations, including his first time chairing the Security Council.

If this was long-planned, it was apparently the best-kept secret in Trump's White House.

Her condemnation of Iran was supported by Israel.

Born in Bamberg, South Carolina, Nikki Haley, born Nimrata Randhawa, is the daughter of Sikh parents Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa, both highly educated academics who immigrated to Canada from Amritsar before eventually moving to South Carolina.

Trump said his daughter, Ivanka, would be a great ambassador to the United Nations but he wouldn't appoint her because of a potential "nepotism" issue.

At one point she suggested that Mr Trump's rhetoric could trigger a world war.

Nikki Haley is out as United Nations ambassador, and maybe, possibly, Ivanka Trump is in.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said she had been "a true agent of reform" at the UN.
