After taking just two points off Del Potro's first three service games, Djokovic, in his eighth final in NY and 23rd at the majors, pounced to break for 5-3.

Osaka, the 20-year-old, who leaped ahead following her victory over 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the finals of the US Open, has become the youngest player to make her place in the list of top 20 players, WTA official website reported.

Rendered ineffective for years due to wrist issues, del Potro made his first Grand Slam final since that win over Roger Federer almost a decade ago. He is now just three Slams behind Rafael Nadal and six back from the record 20 held by Roger Federer.

Del Potro - the 2009 champion back for a second slam final after overcoming career-threatening wrist injuries - threw everything he had at his rival, but Djokovic absorbed the Argentinian's power superbly, his returning of serve particularly outstanding.

It enabled Djokovic to go on and take the second-set tie-break following four unforced errors from Del Potro's forehand - including one on set point.

The only two players with more Grand Slam titles than him are Rafael Nadal (17) and Roger Federer (20).

And the next time we all get together will be at the Australian Open, the tournament he has made his own.

After the controversy surrounding Serena Williams' defeat by Naomi Osaka in Saturday's women's final, a high-quality match between two of the top male players ensured tennis was once again the talking point. "And I keep getting asked questions about it, but I'm not too sure", said Osaka, adding that the penalties had not diminished her sense of accomplishment in winning the match. "I was trying to fix all my injuries to be here once again and I got here after nine years, which is incredible for me because the US Open is my favourite tournament". He knows he is one of my friends on Tour and knows he is one player I want to see win titles.

Sloane Stephens, who won last year's U.S. Open and lost in the quarterfinals last week, dropped from No. 3 to No. 9.

But he bounced back to enter Sunday's match with a 13-set winning streak, leaving in his wake a series of stunned opponents. Of course I'm sad to lose but I'm happy for Novak as well.

"He will be the favourite to win on Sunday", Del Potro said.

"He has 14 already". I think we have pushed each other to the limit every time we get to play each other.

"When I had the surgery of my elbow earlier this year I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through", Djokovic said at the trophy ceremony, referring to the Argentine's long battles with injury. I agree that the girls have to be treated the same as the men, win the same money. Djokovic was able to win the tiebreak 7-4 to secure a two-set lead.

However, 25-year-old Austrian Dominic Thiem can feel more confident than ever in his ability to change that statistic.

CoCo Vandeweghe of the United States and Ashleigh Barty won a thrilling three-setter against Kristina Mladenovic and Timea Babos that lasted nearly 2½ hours.
