"The suspect, the husband, shot the person at the trucking company and then turned and shot his wife", then chased and shot another man who showed up, Youngblood said.

Six people, including the gunman, were dead following a shooting spree in Bakersfield on Wednesday that authorities believe was an act of domestic violence, Kern County sheriff's officials said.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood told reporters the shootings were not random.

The gunman then wandered toward a nearby road and approached two people near a home.

The man pulled over after a deputy confronted him with a firearm and then shot himself dead. "It happened rather quickly of course", Youngblood said. The mother and child, however, managed to escape.

When asked if this was a mass shooting, the sheriff said "absolutely".

He then halted a vehicle with a woman and child inside before stealing the auto.

The story apparently began with the suspect and his wife going to a trucking business on Maxwell Street just before 5:30 p.m.

Youngblood did not identify the victims or provide their ages, and did not identify the business where the shooting occurred.

The suspect fled toward a neighborhood, Youngblood said, and was headed toward a specific residence. He said the officer who confronted the suspect wore a body camera, but the footage has not been released.

"It's very unusual to have six people killed in one incident", NBC quoted him as saying.

But, he added, "This is the new normal, if you look across the country, these types of shootings".

Authorities are interviewing at least 30 witnesses and processing multiple crime scenes as they try to determine a motive for the shooting.
