Apple Watch Series 4 announced with larger displays

GatherRound Apple expected to unveil bigger, pricier iPhone

Any Apple fans waiting to hear about the company's futuristic wireless charging mat were disappointed Wednesday, as the AirPower charger did not get a single mention at Apple's latest annual iPhone event. All three names showed up in code on Apple's website seen by The Verge and All Things How.

The new Apple Watch has a 30 percent bigger display than its predecessor.

Apple unveiled three new iPhones, including two with bigger displays, but perhaps the more dramatic announcement from Cupertino, Calif., on Wednesday was its new Apple Watch, with the new health-related tools.

The Face ID in these models is said to work faster this time than last year's iPhone X. The front camera is the same as the iPhone XS with a 7MP f/2.2 TrueDepth camera that also supports Portrait Mode and Animoji.

The iPhone Xr doesn't have the same high-end screen that is used on the iPhone XS, but comes with a similarly powerful processor and a 12MP camera.

Apple is notorious for running a tight ship with few product leaks, though there are a handful of notable examples where that hasn't been the case. It's a slightly lower-end and more affordable version of the XS. However, this is a more elegant design and the iPhone XR is one good looking smartphone.

While the big reveal was Apple's largest phone yet, the 6.5 inch iPhone Xs Max, I was more impressed by the silicon that drives it. For those of you who have been hoping that the prices of the phones would pale in comparison to last year's models, there is some disheartening news for you.

As far as specs go, the Apple Watch series 4 is powered by a new 64-bit dual-core chipset that should offer twice as much performance as previous iterations.

"Fall detection is a feature we hope you never need, but it's really nice to know it's there", said Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams.

To differentiate itself from the iPhone XS series, the XR gets the iPhone 5C treatment with a choice of six colours, namely Blue, White, Black, Yellow, Coral and Red.

The iPhone XR will be released next month with pre-orders starting on 19 October 2018 in first wave countries. The cheaper phone also is expected to lose the home button.

The iPhone XR starts at $749 Dollars, which we anticipate translating as £749 and will be available to order from 19 October.

Apple definitely is leading the smartwatch sector by a significant margin, and the company was even keen to point out that the Apple Watch is the most popular watch overall as well (Though that's just because there's no one dominating classic watch in a similar position).
