McDonald's is giving away free food "for life" in a contest aimed at boosting the popularity of its online ordering system.

The fine print of what "free McDonald's for life" really means: enough money to buy up to two meals a week for 50 years, or the equivalent of more than $52,000, according to the company's website.

To enter the sweepstake, customers need to use the app to make an order between the 10th and the 24th of August. It appears that all memory of that documentary has been wiped, because McDonald's lovers are going insane over a new competition that will award one victor free food for life. The limit is one entry per day - regardless of method of entry.

McDonald's says the victor will receive a phone case which will be engraved with their name.

The lucky victor will also receive a personalized 24-karat-gold-plated phone case. The victor will also receive $35,400 cash plus $15,600 to offset taxes on the prize. Rob Frankel, a Los Angeles-based branding strategy expert told CNBC "This is going to cost them less than one corporate Christmas party".

McDonald's is shedding the shroud of mystery surrounding the long-rumored and mysterious McGold Card, confirming that the thing of legends and dreams does in fact exist. "You have a much better chance of winning a state lottery than picking something like this up". Yet, as with any contest, you can also just sent McDonald's an email at, with the date in the subject line and your first and last name in the email body.

McDonald's franchisees across the country sometimes offer local heroes free food with their own versions of the card.

The victor will be alerted via email or on their McDonald's app.

The contest is similar to one run by coffee chain Starbucks, which was called Starbucks for Life, only not as generous.

How do you want to spend the next 50 years of your life?

This truly is a smart contest on the part of McDonald's.

"One (1) prize is available to be won".
