Shock and concern have spread around the music world overnight following reports that soul singing great Aretha Franklin is "gravely ill".

Soul legend Aretha Franklin is said to be gravely ill and is surronded by friends and family in her native Detroit, according to veteran entertainment reporter Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411.

"The family is asking for prayers and privacy", he said.

However, while she admitted in 2011 that she had gone "through a number of procedures", Franklin told Access Hollywood that "I don't know where "pancreatic cancer" [reports] came from".

The singer was forced to cancel two live shows in March on doctor's orders, with her last live performance coming at the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY last November. Despite her ostensible plans to retire, she was still booked to perform at this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April but had to pull out of that gig and her 76th birthday show in March per doctor's orders, according to Rolling Stone.

"Oh God. Aretha Franklin is trending for the reason I feared". Journalist Harry Hairston also revealed: "Spoke with close friend of Aretha Franklin and family".

Aretha later said she had had a tumour removed.

The publication reported Aretha was "already fighting exhaustion and dehydration" during her last public performance in November. "Iconic singer not doing well", he tweeted.

Previous year also saw her release her most recent record, "A Brand New Me", which marked her 42nd studio album.

Her biggest hits include "Respect", "I Say A Little Prayer" and "Natural Woman".
