United were linked with several new players in various positions across the pitch during the close-season, but in the end only Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant arrived.

There have also been persistent murmurings of a broken relationship with Mourinho, with Pogba having failed to hit top form in a 2017-18 season that saw United finish 19 points behind Manchester City in the table.

But for all that could have been this summer, Mourinho certainly has the talent at his disposal to make this a successful season, especially if Pogba can replicate Friday night's display. "He got the captaincy and played very well, but Mourinho will have noticed the line and there will always be a response, because there always is".

Pogba, though, posted a cryptic message on Instagram after the match, with his reference to "no matter what's going on" suggesting that something may not be quite right regarding his situation at the club.

MANCHESTER - Paul Pogba eschewed the opportunity to end talk he is unsettled at Manchester United by insisting: "there are things that I can not say, otherwise I will get fined".

The France World Cup victor, who moved to Old Trafford in 2016 in a US$114 million (RM465.5 million) transfer deal, has been linked with another big-money move, to Barcelona, following a series of apparent fallouts with United manager Jose Mourinho.

Their best chance for a stretch came when skipper Pogba threaded through Sanchez, whose laid off for Juan Mata to get away a shot that was deflected just wide. "I have always been talking to the teammates".

But there is something brewing behind the scenes and there has been for some time after Mourinho left Pogba out of the team on multiple occasions last season and publicly criticized him.

"I still enjoying playing football, I still love football and I still give my best with the team, for the team". I learned from all of them, but I don't think, being in leadership, there is a book how to become one.

"I am the same, it's the same Paul Pogba, the France midfielder said, reflecting on his summer. I just try to help the team as much as possible, like they helped me, too". That being said, the majority of pundits thought David de Gea should fill the vacancy, but alas Mourinho favored more of a "position player" in the captain's role.
