Bruce said Tottenham would have to pay a premium to get their man before the transfer window closes on August 9.

Aston Villa's hottest commodity Jack Grealish has all summer-long been linked strongly with Chelsea's rivals Spurs, but there are also some links to a move to Stamford Bridge, and the Express and Star carry the story that former Villa man John Terry could be helping to push such a transfer. "We don't want to lose our best players but it's football and it might happen", he said.

"Meanwhile, favourites Tottenham have drifted from 1/5 to 4/6 as they hunt for their first summer signing, with Villa 6/4 to hang onto the 22-year-old". "The best thing the owners have been able to do is not let anybody go on the cheap", he said. "So if someone wants to buy our players, they are going to have to find a premium and make sure the owners are comfortable with it".

"If they can add Jack Grealish before the deadline, he has the potential to get into the England squad", Crouch wrote in the Daily Mail.

"We're a Championship club and Spurs are in the Champions League", he said.

Pochettino has a proven record when it comes to bringing talented players through and the manager recognises the need to strengthen his midfield as Winks and Victor Wanyama have struggled with injuries during pre-season, while the futures of Mousa Dembele and Moussa Sissoko remain uncertain.

Villa lost the Championship playoff final against Fulham in May and their financial difficulties have since come to light.

For now, the focus for Grealish will be Monday night's Championship encounter with Hull as Villa bid to start the new campaign with a win following a tumultuous summer off the pitch.
