"In his inaugural address to the nation, President Trump declared that the United States stands 'at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, '" Pence said. "But if the White House gets its way, in this special case, there will be a Space Force".

"Across this department and our intelligence agencies, there are literally tens of thousands of military personnel, civilians and contractors operating and supporting our space systems - and together, they are the eyes and ears of America's warfighters around the globe", Pence said.

Outlining details in a visit to the Pentagon for a separate Space Force - proposed by President Donald Trump in June - on Thursday, Pence said the new military service is necessary for ensure America's dominance in space.

The US has outlined plans to "prepare for the next battlefield" by creating a new "Space Force" to counter the threat of China and Russian Federation. The command would be headed by a four-star general who would "be tasked with defending space", said the Post.

In the meantime, White House officials have been working with national security leaders to aggressively move ahead without Congress.

"As POTUS Trump has stated clearly and forcefully, space is a 'war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea", the tweet read.

While the establishment of a new military service would require legislation to be passed by Congress, Pence's strong endorsement could signal new momentum for the creation of the first new branch of the armed forces since the Air Force was established in the 1940s.

"We have been warning for years of the need to protect our space assets and to develop more capable space systems", Reps. It identifies several actions that DoD will take as the nation evolves its space capabilities, "and they are built on the lessons of the past", Pence said.

Unofficial NASA news coverage site NASA Watch gave us three options for future Space Force uniforms: Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars and Star Trek. In a letter to Congress previous year, Secretary James Mattis said he opposed the idea of a separate force, arguing that it would "likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations" and said that a "properly integrated approach is better for carrying out this mission".

To provide context, Nasa is a civilian branch of government whereas the Space Force will be a branch of the U.S. military.

The Pentagon's role in space has been under scrutiny because of a recognition that the United States is increasingly reliant on satellites that are hard to protect in space.

Former astronaut and retired U.S. Navy Captain Mark Kelly called the venture "redundant and wasteful".

"Initially the Department will recommend that the Air Force Space Command commander be dual-hatted as commander of the unified command", the report said.

"There's not a mission today that we do in the military that doesn't in some way depend upon space", Air Force Sec. "But history proves that peace only comes through strength", he added.

"Our adversaries have transformed space into a warfighting domain already and the United States will not shrink from this challenge", Pence added.
