Mauricio Pochettino's side finished a lofty third previous year, but Wright is expecting things to be a lot more hard for them this time around.

Club legend Rio Ferdinand fears that Manchester United will not challenge for the Premier League title and their rivals Manchester City and Liverpool will finish above them in the upcoming campaign.

Ferdinand also sympathised with the Manchester United youth players after Mourinho's scathing comments following their 4-1 pre-season defeat to Liverpool during their tour of America.

Mourinho gave his honest take on their finish in his press conference on Thursday morning, and it is pretty baffling.

Indeed it would be no surprise if they finished in the top half of the division, but I am less optimistic about the prospects of both Cardiff and Fulham and expect both sides to struggle to make much of an impact on their return to the Premier League.

When reflecting on their final position, Mourinho attacked the media for portraying teams that finished below them as "serial winners".

"It is hard for me to understand, to feel, to believe we finish second - which I keep saying".

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so it is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

Despite being quick in making Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant sign on the dotted line earlier this summer, Mourinho's camp have been left frustrated in their pursuit of signing the likes of Harry Maguire, Mina and Jerome Boateng.

"Tottenham have a lot of players who came back late to pre-season after the World Cup and having to wait a few games to get into their new ground is going to be another disruption", he told BBC Sport.

Mourinho also suggested he had not been given enough credit for guiding United to a runners-up finish in the Premier League last season, as he again suggested the negativity around the club was misplaced.
