Los Angeles police have surrounded a supermarket where a suspect barricaded himself, with U.S. media describing it as a possible hostage situation.

The chase ended when the suspect crashed the vehicle, got out and ran into the store on Hyperion Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood, Lopez said.

A shooting and chase suspect is barricaded inside a Trader Joe's in Silver Lake with some customers, prompting a tactical alert and major law enforcement response on Saturday.

Silver Lake - Police have surrounded the Silver Lake Trader Joe's this afternoon after a shooting suspect being chased by police crashed his auto outside the market and then ran into the store where he has barricaded himself, police said.

Los Angeles police have warned the public to stay away from a supermarket in Los Angeles on Saturday evening as they respond to a possible hostage situation.

As officers worked to evacuate people from the store, at least one person was seen with injuries. Los Angeles Fire Department officials confirmed a 20-year-old woman was transported in fair condition.

She said employees eventually let shoppers out. "This incident remains active", he said.

Bystanders in the area of a Los Angeles Trader Joe's that is surrounded by police and emergency vehicles say someone fired off gunshots outside.
