Praising his government for fulfilling his 2015 promise, Prime Minister Modi said that his government not only, "focused on electrification but also reformed the distribution systems across the country".

Under Saubhagya, free electricity connections to all households (both APL and poor families) will be provided in rural areas and poor families in urban areas. Ramchandra Bisht, from Tihri in Uttarakhand, said that employment opportunities have increased in their village after electrification.

Worth mention here Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana - "Saubhagya" scheme was launched by the Prime Minister on September 25, 2017.

He said that it was "unfortunate" that over 18,000 villages in the country were not electrified in last 70 years.

Taking a snipe at the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, PM Modi said: "In 2005, the then government promised to electrify every village by 2009". The then President of the ruling party went a step ahead and said we will bring electricity to every home. "Needless to say, none of that happened during their long tenure", Modi said.

He pointed out that the government has changed the situation in Eastern India which had 14,582non- electrified villages out of 18,000 and out of which 5790 villages were in the North East. One of the residents, Shivnath Singh Khader of Kahla village, even named his daughter "Deepika", to commemorate the day his village got electricity. "You can keep abusing Modi, but also respect those who are taking efforts at the grassroot level to electrify villages", he added. People from Tripura's Dhalai told PM that children are very happy because they can watch TV and can buy fans as well, which helps beat the summer heat.

Young Aarti Sharma from Jammu and Kashmir thanked Prime Minister Modi for this wonderful gift.
