Russian President Vladimir Putin and his USA counterpart Donald Trump have met in the Finnish capital Helsinki to talk about "everything from trade to military to missiles to China".

"The reason why we have hard relations with Russian Federation is not because of the Mueller probe, but because Russian Federation intervened in our election", Mr. Warner said.

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, said he was anxious about Trump being alone in the room with Putin, without his national-security aides. I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. "It means that they are competitive", Trump added.

When asked by CBS if he would ask Putin to extradite the Russians to the United States, Trump said he had not thought of that idea but that he might.

"Not welcome", read one sign, held by Hemmo Siponen, showing a cartoon of Trump and Putin embracing. After Trump concluded his remarks, American reporters shouted several questions about whether he would bring up election meddling during his discussions with Putin.

Trump did not respond; Putin appeared to smirk.

With that, the two leaders gave a quick handshake and their private meeting in the opulent Gothic Hall was under way.

'Fake News' European Council President Donald Tusk said in a Twitter message that "America and the EU are best friends".

The drama was playing out against a backdrop of fraying Western alliances, a new peak in the Russian Federation investigation and fears that Moscow's aggression may go unchallenged.

Trump tweeted: "Our relationship with Russia has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of USA foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!", referring to the current investigation by the special counsel into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

While the U.S. president himself described the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit as "a great success", the event was marked by Trump slapping partner nations with ultimatums and proposing drastic changes to the alliance's funding. Trump seemed to return the favour by waiting until Putin had arrived at the palace before leaving his hotel.

Ahead of his summit with Putin, Trump has both lowered expectations for the talks and issued a stunning rebuke of what has traditionally been one of Washington's closest allies.

Editor-in-chief Kaius Nieme also explained that the banners are intended as a display of support for "colleagues who have to fight in ever toughening circumstances on a daily basis both in the USA and Russian Federation", noting that both countries sit pretty far down on the 2018 World Press Freedom Index. "I'm not going with high expectations". On Ukraine and Crimea in particular, Putin views the issues at stake as core Russian interests.

Mr Putin allowed himself a small smile at Mr Trump's opening gambit. I think we hopefully can do something about that. "Frankly, we have not been getting along for the last number of years", Trump added. "There won't be a Perry Mason here, I don't think".
