The former world number one then capitalised on more poor play from Ostapenko, breaking her serve at the first time of asking in the second set and again in the sixth game. She talked about the power of walking into her matches knowing she has nothing to lose, a point of view she gained by losing nearly everything.

Williams, seems to have taken the lead from her 10-month daughter in her approach to her comeback that has taken her to a 10th Wimbledon final. She retained her title 12 months later before retiring in 2012 and has since had two more children. "I couldn't even walk to my mailbox, so it's definitely not normal for me to be in a Wimbledon final", she said. I'm enjoying every moment.

Williams v Kerber will be a rematch of the 2016 final.

Her rival on Saturday will be No.11 seed Kerber of Germany. Earlier on Centre Court, another German, Angelique Kerber, overcame Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3. She has won 23 Grand Slam titles in singles in her career so far, but this one would be different.

There are potential parallels.

Besieged by allegations that results of matches between the pair were "fixed" by Richard, the situation became ugly at Indian Wells when Venus withdrew injured just before her 2001 semi-final against Serena.

She was off the tour for more than a year after her Australian Open title in January 2017 - won while she was pregnant, she later revealed. Until the start of this tournament, that was the last match Williams played at Wimbledon.

"It's mentally very, very hard", Williams said.

"I was expecting a few more baby steps myself", she said. I was still pregnant at this time previous year. It will be close but I think Serena pulls this off to tie Margaret Court's Grand Slam total at 24.

"It would have been the dream match for me to test my serve and volley against her power game, although it would never have been enough to just serve and volley as she loves a target". I want to get as many as I can, starting with - I still have a match to win, so I'm not even there yet'.

"Top of the heap, " Evert said. We also have to see the competitor who has a 10-month-old daughter travelling with her. "This is about people - male, female, black, white, rich, poor - that are on the floor and don't know if they can get up and do anything, and it's about nothing is impossible".

When asked about the change, Williams said, "I don't know". You have wife. You have a mother. Serena is also the third oldest woman in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final, and is trying to win her first Major as a new mother. But when Goeges' final shot soared long, Williams did not roar with relief or release. Time to move on up to the royal box! Vinci had even booked a flight home for the day after their match.

But she's been absent from this year's tournament because she has been on maternity leave following the birth of Prince Louis in April. She was unable to take advantage of her opponent's sub-80 miles per hour serves.
