President Trump now has around 53.1 million followers, according to his account page.

President Trump and former president Barack Obama have both lost Twitter followers as a result of the social networking site purging questionable its accounts.

On Wednesday, Twitter announced that they were performing a "purge", of sorts, which would get rid of frozen or suspicious accounts.

Besides that of PM Narendra Modi's personal account, even the official account of the PMO saw a drop of over 1 lakh followers.

Social blade, a software that helps track social media stats, threw interesting insights into how politicians fared after Twitter's war on fake followers.

The majority of Twitter users will see a reduction of four followers or fewer, but those with larger follower counts will see a bigger drop, the company said.

When Twitter Inc. detects sudden changes in behavior, like spammy tweeting patterns or sharing of misleading web links, it contacts the owner to confirm control of the account.

Starting with the more popular accounts on Twitter, Katy Perry, the most followed person on Twitter has lost over 2 million, Twitter itself has lost a cool 7.5 million, Obama over 2 million and interesting enough, Donald Trump has only lost 100,000 followers.

Twitter argued that the recent move was aimed at building users' confidence and reflected the fact that follower counts are "a visible feature" on the platform.

"We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", she wrote.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who has the second largest Twitter following in India, suffered a loss of about 4 lakh followers.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga and his 2017 presidential running mate Kalonzo Musyoka had also lost a significant number of followers at 11,159 and 3,387 respectively.

Outspoken political blogger Cyprian Nyakundi and social media influencer Christian Dela have suffered a huge blow losing over 1 million followers combined.
