LONDONPresident Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump touch down in London on Thursday for a working visit, and while his meeting schedule will keep him nearly exclusively outside of the capital, she will be spending some time in town.

But trip planners may go out of their way to shield Mr. Trump from viewing another aspect of the greeting: an oversized balloon depicting the president as an angry baby in a diaper that will be flown from Parliament Square during what are expected to be massive gatherings of protesters opposed to the US leader's presence.

The city appears to not be the president's biggest fan - plans for a formal state visit were put on hold past year after hundreds of thousands of people threatened to protest.

The request for the orange-hued blimp to fly was approved by London Mayor Sadiq Khan - who has had a testy Twitter relationship with Trump - after more than 10,000 people signed a petition.

Donald Trump arrives in the United Kingdom on Thursday for a four day visit, and police are expecting protests around the country.

His meeting with Theresa May will take place in her Chequers country residence on Friday, followed by tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

May will host a black-tie dinner for Trump there, attended by senior ministers and about 100 business leaders, including from Blackstone group, Blackrock, Diageo, McLaren and Arup.

The State Department is warning Americans "to keep a low profile" and "be aware of your surroundings" this week. "It's not for me to decide what's in good taste or bad taste".

"We in this country, and I hope I do not regret saying this, are very good at this sort of thing".

She said: "There is no stronger alliance than that of our special relationship with the United States and there will be no alliance more important in the years ahead".

Ahead of his visit, Trump said Britain was "in somewhat turmoil" as the PM grappled with a political crisis. But I would like to see them work out Brexit quickly.

"It's important for us to send a powerful signal to those who are resisting and campaigning in America that we are standing in solidarity with them", Rehman said.

Donald Trump's son Eric has arrived in Scotland ahead of his father's visit to the UK.

Trump is believed to be spending the weekend playing golf at his Turnberry resort in South Ayrshire, which he bought in 2014, although there has been no official confirmation of his plans.

May was the first head of government to officially meet Trump as president, in January 2017.

Awaiting him on the tarmac on Thursday afternoon were three Osprey helicopters belonging to the US Marines, which are used to transport the President's staff and security detail on overseas trips.

While the many thousands are expected to line the streets and protest against Trump, politicians have become involved too.

The trip coincides with a tumultuous week for May after two senior ministers resigned in protest at her plans for trade with the European Union after Britain leaves next March.
