Mourinho believes England surpassed expectations at the World Cup after last night's semifinal defeat.

"It's tough, we're gutted", he said.

Glenn Hoddle was another pundit to voice concerns over his fitness before the showdown with Croatia, with Kane going on to miss a golden opportunity to double England's lead at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium before being confined to the periphery for the most part.

"The feel of this group of players is very similar to the players we had then, but that team was a lot more experienced in terms of age and experience of big matches", Southgate recalled. We want this to be a family-friendly occasion and a chance for England fans young and old to show the positive spirit of football to the country and the world.

"I have to say, for the first time this is an England team that for the first time have played with some level of composure and control in games, it has been high quality, and good watching them".

The "Football's coming home" chants gathered steam after Kieran Trippier gave Gareth Southgate's side the lead with a brilliant freekick in the first-half.

England manager Gareth Southgate.

"I would just walk out of the room, it is an anthem and has followed the team for a long time but involved some hard moments as well".

"Of course the tournament ended in disappointment and it is nice to be able to put a different frame on it now".

With only hours to go before England take on their World Cup semi-final against Croatia in Russia, Katie Goodland made sure she paid a lovely tribute to her fiancé, England caption Harry Kane.
