Warner Bros have officially given the new Joker origin movie the go-ahead, with Gladiator star Joaquin Phoenix being handed the lead role. A purportedly leaked casting call has the future crime boss caring for his bedridden mother contributing to his eventual complete mental breakdown and descent into the most infamous supervillain Gotham City has ever known.
The Joker is one of the most iconic characters in fiction.
The studio have released a statement confirming the project is underway, with The Hangover'sTodd Phillips to direct the film which is "meant to be different from comic book superhero movies".
But The Hollywood Reporter says Phoenix recently closed his deal, and filming on the origin story will begin in NY this September. Incredible actors like Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger have brought the Joker to life over the years, and he will continue to grace the big and small screen for years to come. According to insiders, the Oscar-winner will not only will be back for the "Suicide Squad" sequel, Warner Bros.is also developing his own standalone movie that will be separate from Phoenix'sJoker project. No matter how far the actor pushed himself to get into character, things just didn't click for him this time around.
